Hydrogen is an energy carrier that has the potential to take over from fossil fuels. Providing it is produced sustainably, hydrogen can make a significant contribution to pushing back levels of greenhouse gases and other harmful substances. Hydrogen can be converted into electricity with great efficiency using a fuel cell. The core of a fuel cell is a membrane, with hydrogen channelled on one side of the membrane and oxygen from the air on the other in a controlled set-up. This generates electricity, heat, and pure water. Ensuring this all works properly, safely, and reliably requires a highly complex system.
