Mobile Pilot Plant for fermentation process installed at ArcelorMittal Ghent

07 June 2022

Recently a mobile pilot plant for the biological treatment of blast furnace gases was realised. After design and realisation at MTSA Technopower premises, the installation was installed at the steel production site of ArcelorMittal in Ghent.

The pilot plant enables the use of industrial CO2 emissions for bio manufacturing!

In a process called “gas fermentation” microbes consume and convert CO2, avoiding its release into the atmosphere, while simultaneously making sustainable bio products.

Heart of the installation are 2 CSTR bioreactors and 1 Trickle Bed bioreactor.

The fermentation process can be tested under a wide range of process conditions with operating pressures up to 8,5 bar. Operation is fully automated.

Design and construction was realized by Bio Base Europe Pilot Plant and MTSA Technopower B.V. with support of the European Union’s Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme in the framework of BIOCON-CO2 Project.

For inquiries regarding this project, please contact Jan ten Have, Technical director of MTSA and project manager of the design and realisation phase of the project.
